“Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike…”

If you come to D.C. for Independence Day, or if you associate Washington only with monuments, museums, and feckless bureaucracy, then here’s an antidote: a lovely shot by local photographer Bill Adler.

Much about this city is maddening, but Bill’s photo captures why many of us take the good with the bad—especially when the good includes, occasionally, a touch of the medieval.

Thanks for reading! Have a safe and happy Fourth of July.

  1. “Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike…”

…and heaving a stone down on them!

That’ll teach ’em how they should “all come to look for America”! Hitchhike back to those dreams about Michigan!

  2. So this is what happens when I go away for a few days? You are both truly injuring the dignity of a blog that recently devoted itself to such lofty matters as a giant cardboard rooster…

  3. Let him have a pack of … pack of… pack of…. Now what is that word I’m looking for? Let’s see…

“Pack of wolves? Pack of bears? Pack of fleas? Pack of whiskers? Pack of noses? Pachyderm? Pack of lies? Pack of troubles? Pack a wallop? Pack of birds? Pack of flying fish?”

Oh, I’ve got it: “Pack of scenery.”
